The purpose of this site is to provide a free and easy way for the automotive enthusiast to research the paint code information for an older car. Data on various General Motors paint codes from 1940 through 1996 is currently available. The links to the various model years are in the right column. We hope to add info for Ford, Chrysler, etc. soon.
The data from 1940 though 1978 inclusive is broken down by specific GM division. Intially, we have Pontiac and Chevrolet broken out seperately and plan to add the other divisions later. The data from 1979 through 1996 represents all divsions of GM automobiles (Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac.
General Motors Body Types
Over the years General Motors often sold its various "bodies" through multiple divisions. Typically, there were some differences in body panels, trim, etc. to help GM sell the same car in different segments of the market. For example, the "F" body was sold as both the Chevy Camaro and the slightly more expensive and upscale Pontiac Firebird. Some of the same colors were used, but were called by different names. For example, code 24 paint on a 1978 Pontiac Firebird was called "Martinique Blue". The identical paint on a 1978 Camaro was called "Ultramarine Blue".
How to Find a GM Paint Code
General Motors attached metal trim tags to the cars as they came down the assembly line. Typically, the tags are found on the cowl or firewall on the driver's side of the vehicle. Here is an example of trim tag found on a 1969 Chevy Camaro. In this case, the car left the factory with Code 69 paint, also known as Cortez Silver.
Additionally, we can see that this car was a Z/28 (X77) and therefore would have had a pair of stripes on the hood and trunk. In this case, the stripes would have been black, as indicated by the "B" next to the "69" paint code .
